What is Ayat al-Kursi?

Ayat al-Kursi is one of the most important and well-known verses of the Holy Quran, located in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 255 (and according to some narrations, verses 256 and 257). بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

اللّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْحَیُّ الْقَیُّومُ لاَ تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَهٌ وَ لاَ نَوْمٌ

Allah is the one besides whom there is no deity; the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence; neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him.

لَّهُ مَا فِی السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِی الأَرْضِ

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth belongs to Him.

مَن ذَا الَّذِی یَشْفَعُ عِنْدَهُ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِهِ یَعْلَمُ مَا بَیْنَ أَیْدِیهِمْ وَ مَا خَلْفَهُمْ

Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them.

وَ لاَ یُحِیطُونَ بِشَیْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلاَّ بِمَا شَاء

And they do not encompass anything of His knowledge except what He wills.

وَسِعَ کُرْسِیُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الأَرْضَ وَ لاَ یَوُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا

His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him.

وَ هُوَ الْعَلِیُّ الْعَظِیمُ

And He is the Most High, the Greatest.

لاَ إِکْرَاهَ فِی الدِّینِ قَد تَّبَیَّنَ الرُّشْدُ مِنَ الْغَیِّ

There is no compulsion in religion. The right path has become distinct from error.

فَمَنْ یَکْفُرْ بِالطَّاغُوتِ وَ یُومِن بِاللّهِ

Whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break.

فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَکَ بِالْعُرْوَهِ الْوُثْقَیَ لاَ انفِصَامَ لَهَا

And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

وَاللّهُ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمٌ

Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into the light.

اللّهُ وَلِیُّ الَّذِینَ آمَنُواْ یُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَی النُّوُرِ

And those who disbelieve—their allies are Taghut. They take them out of the light and into darkness.

وَالَّذِینَ کَفَرُواْ أَوْلِیَآوُهُمُ الطَّاغُوتُ

Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.

یُخْرِجُونَهُم مِّنَ النُّورِ إِلَی الظُّلُمَاتِ

Allah is free from imperfection.

أُوْلَئِکَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِیهَا خَالِدُونَ

Ayat al-Kursi, the Mystery-Laden Verse of Surah Al-Baqarah

Great scholars throughout history have interpreted this verse individually. Shams al-Din Khafri, Kamal al-Din Abd al-Razzaq Kashani, Mulla Sadra, Muhammad Taqi Filsoofi, and other scholars have done this work. Persian poets and literary figures have also referred to this blessed verse in their poetry.

All scholars consider Ayat al-Kursi as a collection of Allah’s attributes, majesty, and omnipotence; because in it, sixteen ranks of Allah’s name and attributes are mentioned. For this reason, many exegetes consider this verse a kind of slogan and monotheistic topic. Perhaps it will be pleasing for you to know that in many narrations, it is mentioned that at the time of the revelation of this verse, a thousand angels accompanied it until it reached the earth.

Why Is It Called Ayat al-Kursi?

Perhaps it will be pleasing for you to know why verse ۲۵۵ of Surah Al-Baqarah is called Ayat al-Kursi. The reason for naming this verse is due to the presence of «وَسِعَ کُرْسِیُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الأَرْضَ» in this verse.

“The word Kursi is a specific knowledge of Allah the Exalted. None of the prophets and messengers are aware of it.”

For the word al-Kursi, several meanings have been used, which are: throne and bed, realm of command and management, center of command and management and knowledge. Certainly, many exegetes say that what is meant by the word al-Kursi in this verse is Allah’s governance, sustainer-ship, and sovereignty over the heavens and the earth.

Knowing the text of Ayat al-Kursi in English is also not without grace. This English text is, in a way, an English translation of verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah:

allah, there is no god except he, the living, the everlasting. neither dozing, nor sleep overtakes him. to him belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. who is he that shall intercede with him except by his permission! he knows what will be before their hands and what was behind them, and they do not comprehend anything of his knowledge except what he willed. his seat embraces the heavens and the earth, and the preserving of them does not weary him. he is the high, the great.”

“there is no compulsion in religion. righteousness is now distinct from error. he who disbelieves in the idol and believes in allah has grasped the firmest tie that will never break. allah is hearing, knowing.”

“llah is the guardian of those who believe. he brings them out from darkness into the light. as for those who disbelieve, their guides are idols, they bring them out from the light into darkness. they are the companions of the fire and shall live in it for ever.”

Story of the Revelation of Ayat al-Kursi to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH)

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) says:

When Allah the Exalted wanted to reveal Surah Al-Hamd and the verses of Shahada Allah (18 and 19) of Al-Imran, Qul Allahumma (26 and 27) of Al-Imran, Surah Al-Tawhid, and Ayat al-Kursi, all of them clung to the Divine Throne. Meanwhile, there was no veil or barrier between them and Allah.

Then he said: O Lord! Do You send us to a house full of sin and disobedience of people who are full of sins, while we are pure and clean?

This has been narrated from Amir al-Mu’minin (AS):

When this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said that Ayat al-Kursi is a verse that descended from the Treasure of the Throne, and when this verse was revealed, every pebble on the earth fell with its face to the ground.
